FEMA BiOp Compliance Assistance

Description

In 2008, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) issued a Biological Opinion requiring changes to FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) within areas affecting populations of federally-listed Puget Sount Chinook Salmon. To comply with the new NFIP standards, cities and counties throughout Puget Sound need to modify their floodplain policies and regulations.

FEMA and NMFS developed three options for jurisdictions to use to comply with the new standards. The Watershed Company's team of planners and biologists can help your jurisdiction select the best approach to achieve compliance while considering habitat conditions and economic development. Our GIS analysts can provide enhanced mapping tools, and our biologists can supply or review habitat assessments as needed.
