An office building in downtown Kirkland was in need of a landscape renovation - thirsty, overgrown and outdated ornamental shrubs dominated the landscape. Overgrown trees shaded interiors and caused maintenance problems. A City-required tree removal and preservation plan was created to protect desirable trees while allowing for the removal of the most problematic ones. New trees, better suited to the space and conditions, were added to offset those removed and a mix of native and drought tolerant ornamental shrubs, groundcover and perennials were added to provide wildlife habitat for birds and year-round visual interest. The landscape received the designation of Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary from Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
