Description

A landscape plan that includes a shrub-steppe restoration, trails and water features was designed by The Watershed Company to accompany construction of the new Chief Joseph fish hatchery on the Columbia River.

Interpretive elements highlight the importance of water in the dry region. Concentric rings of indigenous Columbia River rock surround the barrier-free water feature that welcomes children to splash in an oasis along the windswept ridge. A large stone at the entry pays homage to the origin of all large rivers and links to the water feature with a dry stone streambed.

Native grasses and shrubs offer a landscape focal point, and a colonnade of shade trees along the parking lot provides shade for a sitting wall. Landscape designs were completed for the parking lot and an off-site housing area.

The Watershed Company is also providing permitting assistance for this project.
